Michelle Sumaray was born in 1988 in a small city in east Texas. She has a BA in Fine Arts from Christopher Newport University in Virginia and an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Much of her current work is rooted in the photographic image, though her approach is interdisciplinary and conceptually based. The meaning in her work is layered and subtle, often touching on complex universal truths about time and death while maintaining a personal perspective.

Through photography, video, and other materials, Sumaray creates sculptures and installations that embody her interests. These include the concepts of relationships, trauma, memory, mortality, and longing.
